Why so many forum sections? OC is so convoluted!

15 posts in this topic

This question seems to come up a lot, so here's a topic with the reasoning for it!

OC's forum has aimed to be a resource for modding questions, maps, tutorials, tools, and assets, which to my knowledge only ModHalo attempted to tackle. So unlike HaloMaps which had a separate database dedicated to this, we must create categories by means of sectioning the forum. Had we adopted HaloMap's approach to releases on the forum-front, finding content would be a disaster as everything is jumbled together in generalized sections. Releases were only beneficial here as an announcement to get people's attention.

Dedicated sections ease content discovery in another big way: SEO. Our crawl rates our geared towards releases, and careful description of sections goes a very long way towards the search engine ranks of the content within. Ever wonder why OC always beat out HaloMaps in search rankings, even before that site's decline? In general, we top relevant results around 95% of the time.

Though the best solution for people is always a unique one, so what I'd suggest is making a custom activity feed for only the sections you'd like to follow! This forum makes it quite easy to set these up; check out the menu at the top-right of any page (on the blue bar).

Tiddy-bits:

Well if analytics is all you care about, then open a porn section. I'm told Cortana's feet are a popular kink. This website is a mess of sub-forums and I have gotten lost more than once. I could post in a thread and the next day be unable to find it without looking in my post history. Maybe people are searching for this website so much because that's the only way to navigate it.

You really don't have any solutions beyond creating an unavigable mess, as described in OP. Neither do I; it's just the nature of having releases on a forum.

Can't really argue for focusing on all but releases, as that's why most people use OC, even back in the day before we had so many sections. Were we to cut focus on releases, that would take platform downhill faster than its already been going.

Also FYI, search rankings don't tell you how often something is searched. It's how highly a search provider rates your content in search results. You want to release your content on platforms with the highest ratings, because that's what gets seen in a search.

I think this thread having to break down why the mess of sub-forums is better than the old way of doing things is proof that it's not. The solution is to go back to the old ways by merging inactive sub-forums and redesigning the main directory. Or keep telling everyone this is better despite some people leaving because of it. Citation is needed on people leaving other Halo forums because of an inability to navigate them.

Other than ModHalo, there isn't another forum that aimed to host such content, so I don't know what you mean by "the old way of doing it"

You weren't here for it, but in the first 5 years of OC's history I was always consolidating inactive sections, and doing so now would easily kill the last reason the forum is still useful to the broader community. I'd learned the hard way that merging wasn't the approach, but here's a good test for you. Using just the HaloMaps forum content, find me all the tutorials there, or all the maps, or all the tools. Even given an hour to compile a list for each, you still wouldn't be able to.

What's special about OC that MaloMaps forum, which was much more active and better known, died while OC didn't? There wasn't some toxic drama that brought it down; that was HaloMap's bread and butter for as long as I can remember. Its utility was in general modding discussion, and Discord can support that an order of magnitude better than any forum can. Both HaloMaps and OC dried up on that front once the Halo Discords took off, which is why you don't see many active WiP topics, or questions being asked in support here anymore. Why are people still here then? Releases. What would you use the HaloMaps forum for now that it's dead? Releases. Though if it were organized, you could use the forum for quickly finding released content, but now you'd better know exactly what you're looking for and use Google for it.

Now ask yourself how long it takes to find our Maps, Tutorials, and Tools? Whether you like it or hate it, it only takes 1 click, and about 5 seconds of reading if you're not familiar with the site.

I honestly feel like consistency is more important. I have zero trouble navigating the forum at all.

They're broken down logically

Each game has their own category, each category has subcategories. They're the same for each game.

I feel this setup is better than one subforum being packed with everything. If someone wants to be able to just look through what tutorials are available they can do that. No problem. Compared to most modern platforms like say Reddit where it relies on the user to tag the information contained accordingly. You can't trust individuals to add the right tags, but you can easily just move a post from one subforum to the correct location easy.

We do have to keep in mind the sanity of management as well. I feel they've made a good system.

Modhalo used to be chaotic, Halo maps is ugly, Reddit is too generalized. This is my favorite forum that has existed for Halo in my 16 years of modding.

I've never had issues navigating the forum unless there's a new section added or something got moved. But that's just temporary issue with muscle memory.
I always felt things were clearly labeled. It just depends on whether things are posted in the correct sections.

I guess I'm confused on why this is even being discussed. What's the alternative solution?

"Why are there so many forum sections?" Well, there's a lot of different aspects to halo modding. The forums are organized very efficiently and I personally can't think of any ideas on how it could be improved, although I haven't agonized over it either.

I might have been spoiled by starting at modhalo.net but every time I tried to find anything from the halomaps forum it was a complete dumpster fire. If anyone is suggesting you do anything like halomaps they're out of their mind.

I've seen people complaining about it every couple months or so in other Discords, so figured if I caught someone in the act I might link this topic lol

It generally is people that were used to HaloMaps.
