Update: Block camera shake is back; fixes moved to commands

By popular demand, chimera_block_camera_shake is back. This means you can now choose between playing with the fixed camera shaking behavior... or no camera shaking behavior.

 

Also, a number of fixes have been moved to commands:

• chimera_fix_blue_particles - Fix blue particles appearing in 32-bit maps.
• chimera_fix_contrails - Fix contrail behavior on high frame rates.
• chimera_fix_flashlight - Fix flashlight being too dim.
• chimera_fix_inverted_flags - Fix various shader behavior being inverted.
• chimera_fix_lens_flare_scaling - Fix lens flares not scaling at higher resolutions.
• chimera_fix_motion_sensor - Fix motion sensor behavior on high frame rates.

 

These fixes are still on by default, of course. But now you get to choose how broken you want Halo to be!

 

I also added chimera_invert_shader_flags for Custom Edition which allows you to choose to whether to un-fix (break) Halo's behavior in terms of fog and detail over reflection.

After I made those commands, the ghost of an Xbox that was killed by a clock capacitor came to my room last night as I was sleeping.

 

It showed me Halo's past, where Halo: Combat Evolved was good on Xbox. No netcode issues. No graphical issues. No sound issues. It was Halo in its purest form, and it was beautiful in its 30 FPS, 480p, and blurry bilinear texture filtering glory.

 

It then showed me Halo's present, where Halo: Combat Evolved is currently completely broken and memed on MCC, and Halo PC has a bunch of bullshit mods that force people to pick and choose how broken they want the game. I learned that those commands I added to Chimera exacerbated the problem. Because now that picking and choosing bullshit existed within the SAME mod.

 

And then it showed me a vision of Halo's future, where Halo: Combat Evolved is dead. I stood in front of Halo: Combat Evolved's grave, and after I read the inscription on the tombstone, I cried.

 

The Xbox told me that, because MCC didn't last forever and because it was tied to Xbox Live and required signing on at least once, you couldn't play it anymore once the servers were shut down, so it was ultimately a waste of SSD space if you still had it.

 

But then it told me that Halo PC, which didn't have this problem, had a different problem - everyone stopped playing the game because there was no good version of it due to there being a bunch of bullshit mods that made you pick and choose how broken you wanted your game to be. As a result, map developers didn't know what to target (the fixed version? the broken version?), and everyone lost interest due to it being a confusing nightmare to maintain and support.

 

And all the original Xboxes were dead, so you couldn't play it on Xbox. And because everyone decided to follow the law and only obtain BIOSes and games legally, nobody could emulate it.

 

Halo: Combat Evolved as we knew it was gone. Forever.

 

Then I realized I helped kill it. By giving people the option to reintroduce bugs that had no business being in the game in the first place, I sabotaged the game.

 

But that alone wasn't the fatal blow. Over time, more fixes were added to Chimera until eventually all known issues were fixed. But nobody cared because everyone was more than happy to make bullshit that targeted the broken graphics with the instruction to turn the fixes off. So nobody actually played the fixed version of the game when it did exist - even people who wanted to play the fixed game because only content for the broken version was made. As a result, Halo never went anywhere and stagnated until it died. Not with a bang or even a whimper. More like a fart.

 

Suffice to say, by making those commands, I assisted in setting Halo: Combat Evolved on a one-way path to its own annihilation. The straw that broke the camel's back, so to speak.

 

I wasn't able to sleep for the rest of the night. My conscience weighed on me heavily thanks to my actions that I committed last night, and I almost became insane as a result of this experience. Was it real? Who knows. But it disturbed me greatly.

 

All I know is that, for the sake of Halo: Combat Evolved's own life, I've decided to remove those fixes as commands except for one: chimera_invert_shader_flags. And it is only available for Halo Custom Edition. I have decided that this is the only compromise I will ever make when it comes to this.

Okay, shitposting aside, I've reaffirmed my original decision that fixes should not be in commands. After talking to some people who actually mod this game, I realized this was a terrible idea, and nothing good would ever come from it if I kept it in there. So I've added chimera_invert_shader_flags as the one and only compromise I will make here, and it will only work for Halo Custom Edition.

 

I've also removed chimera_interpolate as a command again. So, it's just always on. The only reason I left it in as a command was to support EXTREMELY slow PCs that couldn't handle it. But I've realized that, if I really REALLY want to fix this game, I may just have to let them go.
