Future of MCC PC: Playercounts

32 posts in this topic

Do you think Halo 2 and 3 will bring the player count back up? I left for ~40 days and the game lost a TON of players. Hopeful or naw?

Tiddy-bits:

Sure.

That said, I imagine Halo 2 will probably only temporarily bring it back up. Halo 3 is the real heavy hitter.

If only the game came with a server browser...

The entire collection is doomed without a server browser and modding support. If those aren't in by the time 343 is done with it, it won't last like CE has.

If you bought Halo PC in 2003, you got a really mediocre port, but at least, throughout its 16 years of life, you were able to get into a game whenever you wanted to.

On MCC, sometimes waiting 15 minutes doesn't always guarantee a game, let alone the actual version of Halo you want to play.

Also, Halo CE Anniversary is really not modding friendly, where Halo PC is (and is probably another reason why people still play this).

At the very least, if they don't add a server browser, Halo PC will likely outlast Halo CE Anniversary and possibly even MCC despite a lot of people considering Halo PC to be "dead" for years. They should obviously add modding support, too, because they probably aren't going to actually fix most of the issues that were introduced into the games when they were ported. That said, having played the Insider build, Halo 2 is surprisingly a really good port, even if the insider, itself, isn't all that stable.

Halo PC will always live solely because of spanish speaking countries, honestly. It has that advantage.

I agree with you. If they dont get certain things done it'll be dead. I host Halo CE server and if MCC doesnt add that functionality I will continue to play CE indefinitely.

FTFY

I remember Gearbox stating that they wouldn't fix the netcode in 2005 because the game was essentially dead at that point and not worth it.

Point is, any game with a server browser fosters a proper online community and creativity. Without that, you get a disjointed mess of players all rioting to the developers wanting different things and exasperated playlist designers that get nothing but hate mail 24/7. Want to solve that? A properly functioning server browser with proper mod support.

Side note, Randy Pitchford offered that he would get a team at Gearbox to fix it if player population was still over 6,000 in 2006. It was well over that and he just ignored anyone who called him out on the promise.

It hasn't been two decades, so you can't replace "years" with "decades" yet, and even if you could, "years" would still be correct. Your FTFY has been denied.

The sad part is that I can get into a game that is full of players so much faster on this "dead" game than I could on MCC. It might not be up to snuff in terms of netcode, and it'll probably be a Blood Gulch server, but that's better than having to wait several minutes in the main menu in between games.

Matchmaking can stay where it belongs with the console plebs.

I'll be honest man, matchmaking is welcome in my opinion. While Halo PC is alive and well, it's incredibly hard to find a consistent experience where the settings are solid and a match feels like an actual match.

Experience in server browser:

Look for server with community you like, play whatever playlist they have set up, hang out in a casual join/leave lobby, leave at any point without feeling guilt.

Experience in matchmaking:

Search for the game settings you agree with most, join a lobby, match should start/end with same group, once match is over you restart.

The first one lends itself really well to casual play and, in an organized community, can be VERY useful to real competitive matches. The second one is great for a consistent experience where you experience complete matches in a sterilized environment. Both can work very well together but in the current year, you shouldn't release a PC game without one of them. Acting like we have to choose between the two is idiotic.

Eventually games die down in popularity, and as you know, matchmaking needs literally thousands of players or else players are going to be waiting longer and longer for games. So, yeah, I'd argue having a server browser is, for the long term, more important. Having matchmaking is fine, of course, when the game is still in its prime, and I'm sure there's a good amount of convenience in doing so.

343 Industries, unfortunately, decided to just use matchmaking, and this *will* exponentially kill their game as players leave in frustration.
