Model 3 Motor Speculation

Even if you're not into Tesla, this is a pretty interesting video.



I used to build my own variations of electric motors as a kid, and I remember (before I even knew it was a thing) tried building a DC reluctance motor, just to avoid using commutators. Though I think that sort of motor in particular is best suited to a ducted prop, because the prop could be the rotor, so there'd be no reason for physical contact with the housing while it's running (addresses the sound problem). You would also achieve greater airflow due to lack of motor housing behind the prop, and less friction due to the lack of bearings.
