Yeah... 

So waiting for the next extinction event to kill us off and severely hindering advancements in technology and medicine is acceptable in exchange for... what? It's hard to overstate the advancements in just the medical field as a result of having the ISS, let alone what it has done for material sciences, communication, and general consumer electronics. Space exploration has consistently had the greatest return on investment of anything else in the world, so pushing that envelope beyond LEO will be immeasurably beneficial to both our planet and humanity. However, putting aside all the ways it improves our standards of living, there's always going to be another extinction event in the future. It's not a matter of if, but a matter of when, and the best position we can put ourselves in is to become a space-faring civilization, for the redundancy.

The European Space Agency isn't a company, and they have a ton of deep space missions under their belt.

A vast majority of our technologies come from advances in space exploration, and this is also a big step towards becoming a multi-planetary species with Mars, which is wildly important to our future.
