Halo server owners of Open Carnage!

I'm interested to know the reasons for why you ban on your Halo server and for how long?

On my server I don't ban, and thats down to two things:

  • Its relatively easy to get around both IP and Hash bans.
  • I started my server with the goal to be as "ban free" as possible, and so far that has been the case (excluding one incident), however aimbotters are temp banned using SAPP's aimbot detection - the ban lasts 1 hour.

Tiddy-bits:

I IP ban for aimbotting and thats about it. The threshold is pretty high to avoid false positives, usually around 20,000 points or so (I think the default is 10,000). I rarely ever see anyone banned in them at all, and when they are it's usually quite obvious. The reason I do it with permban though is because I've noticed that "ban-free" servers usually are havens for people who just want to troll or hack to their hearts content.

I know circumventing a hash ban is cake with a multiclient. IP bans are easy, too, but a little more of a pain in the ass to actually do, especially frequently. Unless your ISP Is one that gives you a new IP each time you restart your modem, MAC spoofing or a VPN both have some drawbacks that make constantly circumventing more hassle than its worth for most people that are banned like that. They'll just go find somewhere that won't ban them for BS, like your server :P

All in all I hardly ever ban someone manually, unless they're being a total thundercunt, like being extremely verbally abusive towards someone. Even then it's a kick first, if they come back and keep it up, I mute them for a day or so. There's hardly ever a reason to really permban someone when muting and kicking are options, as well as temporary bans.

Bots just ruin the game for other players, and while I can deal with it and go toe to toe (or at least used to, i'm fairly rusty these days), a lot of players can't, and it makes the game less fun for them. Needs of the many sort of deal.

Hash bans are difficult to get around if your server doesn't allow people with fake CD keys to join. This is supported in Phasor, but it can (probably, don't ask me how, I won't do it) be hacked into SAPP by modifying the dll file. It'll immediately fry anyone with a multiclient.

There are a few reasons on why I would take any action on someone, and each is on a case-by-case basis:

  • They are harassing players (they get muted)
  • They are repeatedly teamshooting (they get kicked)
  • They are telling people to not swear (they get muted - it is against the rules to say that swearing is against the rules)
  • They are pretending to be an admin (they get muted or banned)
  • They are cheating (they get banned for an hour)

I used to ban people for aimbotting for a whole week, but I've reduced it to an hour.

Edit: Just so you know, the downside to preventing fake CD hashes from joining is that a lot of people have pirated the game and won't be able to join. 40-60% of people will probably not be able to join.

When my first halo clan was active, I had OP on all 8 servers we had.

Kicking for

bad language

trolling

repeated team killing

Banning for

admin impersonation

aimbotting

Because back then we would always have about 2-3 servers full of people we had to kick quite a bit, bans were rare though

I used to be heavy-handed with the banhammer, but now not so much.

On my server I have:

-002's profanity filter SAPP Script, to which I added more words myself.

-Anti Spam.

-Anti Capslock.

-AFK Kick.
-Ping Kick.

-Packet Limit (basic DoS protection).

So there's little need for me to take action on anyone myself. If people still harass other players, I'll just textban them. If they somehow still continue bad behavior (team shooting for example or whatever reason to take action) I'd temporarily ban them.

And there's the category of people who I outstandingly dislike and I just don't want them on My f*cking server. The weather forecast for those people: Cloudy with a chance of banhammer.

The only rule a server should ever have is dont be a dick.

The moment you are a dick you can gtfo.

Pretty much how I see it. Of course, everyone is entitled to the way they want to run their server. I just personally don't believe in censoring profanity because chances are the game will use profanity and supports killing people. A few curse words won't harm anymore more than being killed in the game.
