Ukraine crisis: 'Don't arm Kiev' Russia warns US

A close ally of Russian President Vladimir Putin has told the European Parliament that "all-out war" could result if the US supplies arms to the Ukrainian government in Kiev.

Relevant to post above.

Didn't really think this was worthy of its own news article, mostly because I don't think most people know who this is or the significance of this article.

http://www.nytimes.com/2015/02/13/business/media/david-carr-media-equation-columnist-for-the-times-is-dead-at-58.html

David Carr, who wriggled away from the demon of drug addiction to become a journalistic celebrity, a name-brand media columnist at The New York Times and a best-selling author who reported on his own near demise and recovery, died on Thursday in Manhattan. He was 58.

Mr. Carr collapsed in the Times newsroom, where he was found shortly before 9 p.m. He was taken to St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The cause had not been determined.

Mr. Carr also survived cancer and struggled with alcoholism, but none of that undercut his energy. He made frequent television appearances on talk shows and news programs, often spoke to journalism classes, and in 2011 was the leading figure in a documentary about The Times.

On the evening he died, he had moderated a panel discussion of “Citizenfour,” the Oscar-nominated documentary about Edward J. Snowden, the former National Security Agency contractor who leaked classified information indicating that the United States government was conducting global surveillance on a far larger scale than was publicly known.

The irony.

Well, it makes sense for Russia to say what they're saying; if their interests are against Ukraine, they wouldn't just lie down and accept another country arming a side they oppose. Any disagreement with it aside, it's all logically sound.

If we do supply Ukraine with weapons and materiel, it will be very limited and older stuff. We can't and won't risk the dissemination of classified or restricted equipment into Europe. We've already lost too much in Iraq as it is.

The Russians on the other hand have actively participating Spetsnaz and Advisers who bring modern equipment with them, train the NAF in its use, and stay with the unit to "monitor" operations. They also have enormous stockpiles of older materiel and weapons left over from the Cold War, they can equip and arm the entire NAF without putting a dent in their stockpiles...

The US on the other hand, can't do the same. As people danced in the streets in 1991 at the end of the Cold War and possibility of the Nuclear Apocalypse, the US Government set about to entirely dismantling the US Military's Cold War Infrastructure, right down to individually issued equipment.

The destruction of US Cold War stockpiles, combined with the last decade of fighting terrorism and combat in the Mid-East, we've completely worn down our logistical/supply system and combat capabilities. We can offer Ukraine very little.

We can't even effectively offer direct military support. Outside of our Rapid Deployment Forces (The 82nd AB Division and 75th Ranger Regiment, with a few USAF & USN assets, and Marine Expeditionary Units), we have a single battalion stateside that meets combat readiness requirements.

The paltry deployment of a single Brigade Combat Team, of which the the majority consists of Bradley IFV and Stryker AFV, has 20 M1 Abrams MBT.

"Interview with a POW from the 40th Mechanized Battalion"

Summary by /u/xtender5:

Divorced father of 6, tractor driver. Ignored first 3 draft notices, after the 4th was picked up and taken to assembly point. Was told they would be held for 45 days for re-training then sent home. Wrote a declaration that he does not consent to be sent to combat. He and several dozen others were taken by truck to Debaltsevo and dropped off with the comment "wait for rotation". Command left almost immediately when the encirclement became apparent. Etc.
Not a full translation, but you get the idea.
