Should humans attempt to colonize space?

With the possibility of overcrowding or a dying planet in our midst, some are looking to the stars for our future. With technological advances and science galore, moving to another planet seems like a pretty grand idea. However, with the challenges that it would take to move hundreds of thousands of people, along with the improbability of such people being able to keep up with training standards - when most cannot even do so on Earth, some quickly shoot this idea down. If space colonization was done, what would the laws be in regards to territory and general rules of the lands? If colonization was started, who would be the selected individuals to go into unknown territory?

Tiddy-bits:

It's inevitable. Life is like a parasite that lives off the back of the planet where it begins. Once it's strong enough, it leaves to live off their home solar system. After that it feeds off its entire galaxy. That just goes on for as long as that particular creature exists until it's wiped out. Not only will it be a "good idea" at some point but it will eventually be absolutely necessary for our survival. Unless you consider our survival unnecessary in which case is a different discussion.

So long as it were technologically possible and the people going into space to colonize a planet were willing participants, then why not go?

Have you seen the movie 2012? It would likely end up like that, at least at the start. I don't think the problem would be finding people who would want to go, but more so about the people who wouldn't be able to train enough or pay enough to participate.

Eventually, yes, this planet will die like all the rest. We have the ability to go on other planets, we could soon have the ability to live on these planets for extended periods, but moving an entire world or country without extreme selection would be nigh impossible.

We should make a giant elevator.
