Building a gaming Desktop

12 posts in this topic

Awhile ago I posted a thread about upgrading laptop hardware which I've come to learn is completely pointless unless I want more unused RAM.

I was also told that I should just make my own desktop computer, which I was always planning to do. I'm trying to keep the budget under $500 and it's working out well so far. This is my first computer build so I was hoping I could get some assistance here.

I want to make sure have a checklist of all the things I need. If I'm forgetting something please let me know.

Here are the links to the stuff I am currently about to purchase. Things are missing because I'm not sure what I need.

If you think, know, or recommend I need a different part, feel free to let me know.

Motherboard: http://www.tigerdire...3&sku=G452-7800

Graphics Card: http://www.tigerdire...1&sku=G458-0642

RAM x 4: http://www.tigerdire...2&sku=V261-7100

Processor: http://www.tigerdire...19&sku=A79-9864

Case: http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=1636710&CatId=1842

HDD: http://www.tigerdire...sku=TSD-500AZRX

Power Supply: http://www.tigerdire...&sku=ULT-LSP750

Thermal Paste: http://www.tigerdire...27770&CatId=503

Optical Drive: Missing

Processor Fan: Missing

Current Price: $453 (with discount stuff and all)

Extra Questions:

The graphics card I am thinking of buying uses 2gb of memory. Do I really need that for gaming or can I drop it down to 1gb?

I'm not looking for quality as much as performance and frame rate.

The RAM cards I'm getting say "Bare DIMM" is that any different from a regular DIMM or 240pin DIMM's? Going with whatever info tigerdirect.com gives me.

So pretty much what I know I need next is a processor fan. I looked at the motherboard picture and it looks like the I need a fan that uses bolts or something like that. Though when I looked for a fan, they didn't seem to fit into the socket. I'll still be looking, but if anyone can help out I would appreciate it.

I know I need cables and such. If anyone with computer building experience knows if they send the cables along with the product, or if I have to buy them separately, please let me know.

Thank-you, have a nice day.

Tiddy-bits:

It's not too bad, but I'd recommend a better card than the GT series. GT is the lower end Nvidia stuff. GTS is mid range and a step below GTX. You'd get more than your money's worth with a GTS series card. Ask Tucker about AMD cards though, because I have no idea.

If you wanted to shave a bit more off the price, you could downgrade the PSU. That machine won't take 750w. It'd probably work happily with a 500w PSU*.

*guesstimate warning: I haven't done any calculations for your build.

It largely depends on your resolution but if it's something like 1920x1080 or lower then no. Many cards with higher amounts of memory hit a GPU bottleneck at higher resolutions before the point where the extra memory becomes useful.

You also need to take into account streaming processors and clock speeds. Memory is useless if it cannot operate at a decent clock speed and/or frequency.

I read that I can use a GeForce graphic card with an AMD motherboard, but I won't be able to use it's SLI function if I but 2 GeForce graphic cards.

Can anyone confirm this? If so then I'll replace it with a Radeon card. That or a different motherboard.

This was true for a while, however with more recent chipsets, such as what's on the board you picked out, SLi is supported.

Oddly, this is familiar to you... as if from an old dream.

How could I be sure if the motherboard doesn't say SLI supported? It reads CrossFireX ready for Radeon cards. And the only reason why I've stuck with GeForce is spec and price wise given by the website.
