Using old phone as music player

17 posts in this topic

Well when I first bought my phone (October 2013) it was already one or two generations behind. It's an LG-VS410PP with Android 2.3.6 (and is no longer supported for updates, obviously).

I've been thinking about buying a new phone and putting my same plan on it, and using this one as a music player to replace my Samsung something or other (which has a couple dead spots on the touchscreen). Aside from factory resetting, is there any suggestion you all have for changes to make on the phone to optimize it for becoming a media player?

Or, alternatively, is it a shit choice as a music player?

Tiddy-bits:

I use a really old phone with no service as a music player. If yours came out when smartphones were just getting popular, expect it to glitch out a lot, but if it has bluetooth, it's a good option for connecting to wireless speakers or headphones.

It's a 2012 phone. Does have bluetooth. I think it's technically still modern just not current.

Most important specs:

800 Mhz CPU

512 MB RAM

2 GB storage (supports up to 32 GB micro SD)

I use my old iPhone 5 with bluetooth Sony speaker, top job. Tune in is the app I use, sometimes spotify.

Root it, and install V!per4Android. It replaces the default Audio drivers on Androids and allows for some decent customization. It definitely improves the audio, so I'd advise checking it out if you're planning to get another Android.

I'll have to check this out, sounds interesting.

I have an old samsung galaxy that I plug into the garages sound system for streaming music.

If it flies, floats, or fucks, rent it.

Why don't you just get a new phone and put music on that? Its capacity sucks and you would have to get a 32gb card anyway, why not just put the card into the new phone? Currently I've got a 32gb card in my GS4 that is dedicated for music.

Here are my reasons:

1. I don't like all-in-one solutions. I want dedicated devices for different enough functions.

2. I don't want to throw away something that works well.

3. This would give me separate battery charges for each activity. Listening to music on my new (already lower battery life than the old) phone would surely make me frustrated at how quickly it was dead.
