I need a recommendation

13 posts in this topic

Need a decent DX11 card that's under $200 bucks. By decent I mean something that can at least run newer games on low-medium settings.

Here's my current specs:

------------------
System Information
------------------
Operating System: Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit
Processor: AMD Phenom II X4 960T Processor (4 CPUs), ~3.0GHz
Memory: 8192MB RAM
---------------
Display Devices
---------------
Card name: ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series
Manufacturer: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc.
Chip type: ATI display adapter (0x9460)
Display Memory: 4095 MB

How does something like this look?

Tiddy-bits:

I don't feel like AMD's R9X's are worth buying unless it's 290x, and if you want to put the money in over a 290 for a couple more frames.

The 290(x)'s have major stability issues, stay away at all costs.

Oddly, this is familiar to you... as if from an old dream.

Unless new cards are out before Christmas then new cards are out of the picture.

Good advice about the 290s. Do you have any alternatives? I was thinking of sticking with AMD because that's what I already have, but I suppose that doesn't matter.

Can anyone else vouch for the card Disiac posted?

The GTX 760 will give you a little more muscle in most games than the 270X, but you can get a 4GB 270X for about the same price that can give it an edge in other areas.  I have an MSI R9-270X 4GB, and I was just playing AC Unity and at 1600x900, all settings at their highest except AA (FXAA) I get 20-35fps.  It's usually 25-30.  It sounds bad but the frametime is low so it's bearable.  Plus the next patch is supposed to improve framerates in it anyway.  I would try to get a 280X or 770 if possible.  If there are 760s with more than 2GB of VRAM, then that'd be the sweet spot IMO.

My friend has the EVGA 760 and it plays Crysis 3 at allllllmost maximum settings at 1920x1080.  It does so slightly better than the 270X, which is what I have.  It's a pretty good card, I'd vouch for it.

Edit: Looks like the 4GB 760s jump from $200 to near $300.  Here is a 270X with 4GB that's the same price as what you linked in the OP

double edit: The Sapphire one says it has 2048 stream processors, but that's apparently a typo.  The 4GB is still right though, according to the reviews.

Getting one of these for Christmas:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814127745&cm_re=760-_-14-127-745-_-Product

Thanks for the suggestions everyone.

I was thinking of upgrading my processor as well. My current is a Phenom II 960T (my mobo supports AM3+), how much will this bottleneck the 760?

I was thinking maybe something like this or a little cheaper if possible:

My main goal in upgrading is to make sure the CPU does not bottleneck the GPU as much as possible.
